Sunlight And Your Home

It's no secret that life on Earth is highly influenced by the sun. It affects everything - climate zones, the length of day and night, food for all living creatures. People of many cultures used to worship Sun as a God that created all life on Earth.

Ancient Greeks had a beautiful myth about Helios he drove his golden chariot up to haven, spreading light on the skies and although the horses were wild, he never lost his course. One day his young son Faeton took the chariot for a drive, but couldnt hold the horses and they came too close to Earth, causing climate over-warming and wild fires. Actually, this myth could imply that the global warming we are so worried about these days could have happen in the past as well.

But enough said about the past - this introduction is only here to show the importance of the sun and the way it affects everything. From now on we concentrate on the way an architect is dealing with the sunlight whether he wants to protect the house from it or to enhance its presence.

The ideal positioning of the house is different in various parts of Australia. And if in the north (Darwin) the main concern is hiding from the sun, in the south (Melbourne) we need to think of a way to keep the sunlight in our house.

To keep sunlight in the house means both letting it in and making it stay there for as long as possible. In the past, before people learned about glass, they used ox bladder to replace glass in the windows. But nowadays we have most elegant sealed insulating glass units which basically two layers of glass with vacuum in between.

The reason for the 2 layers of glass is the hothouse effect, which lets the suns warmth in and doesnt let it out, no matter what is the difference between the temperatures inside and outside the house.

So when we build a house in the south of Australia, we would want to keep the heat in summer and hide from it in winter. One option is to have as many windows as we can face north-east or north-west and no windows on southern walls. As for protection from the sun we will use an external structure, because those means of protection are much more efficient than internal, such as curtains or blinds.

Another thing to be said about sun is that its light varies in intensity during different times of day less intense in the morning, blazing heat in the midday and quite strong until the dusk.

This is why we should plan bedrooms and nurseries to face north-east, this way they would get most of the sun light in the mornings. Isnt it a great feeling to wake up to the first rays of morning sun?

Living room, kitchen, meals area and study are best to be facing north and north-west. As for garages, bathrooms and toilets, powder rooms sun makes no difference.

Another option is to build your house is with most of windows facing south or south-east those rooms will be the coolest in the house. Just a few rays of morning sun would enter through the south-east oriented windows, and all south-facing windows will get is a diffused light (very good for art galleries with artificial lighting).

Moving north, when your house is in the tropical climate all you think about is how to hide away from sun which is everywhere. Our builders didnt waste any time during the last century they have learned how to use lot of materials to protect the house from sun, such as concrete, metal, ceramics, glass, fabrics and plastic.

Glass of different colors blocks sun very well, metal lattices around windows are also efficient and concrete embrasures on the facade take all the heat so none enters the house.

Adding ceramics to the concrete makes it rich in color and plastic is indispensable where blinds are concerned. There are many types of blinds vertical, roman, roller blinds and all of them have become an integral part of any modern house.

So house in the northern part of Australia is a house in tropics, which means that it should have as many walls with little windows or no windows at all. Let the breeze in plan some open spaces such as galleries and corridors for the air to circulate through. Add sun-blocking lattices and blinds, have terraces and balconies covered. Its best that the windows face south or south-east, but if that is not possible add visors above them. Wide-crowned trees also work well creating lots of shade and making bedrooms feel more comfortable. If you have a pool, use a moving plastic see-through cover for it - works well to protect you from blazing midday sun.

Throughout history there has been a secret that successful happy people have practiced to make their dreams and wishes come true yet the average person does not know it. Santa is now revealing to the world this masterful secret that transforms lives and can literally have the power to make your wishes come true! It is called The Law of Attraction'. In a nutshell The Law of Attraction states that whatever you give your energy, focus and attention to (whether wanted or not wanted) you will attract into your life.

Latest science research tells us that we are energy. When we think or have a feeling we give off vibrations of energy that people around us pick up on. You have heard people say "she gives off bad vibes" or "I get a really good feeling about him" that's because you can sense and feel the energy or vibrations people give out. This is why it is important to pay attention to your feelings and if they are not positive then decide in that instant to change them so they are offering a good vibration that will bring back good into your life.

Awareness of your vibration is the first step in The Law of Attraction. If you are aware of what you are giving out and responding to then you can change it. Most people are simply unconsciously responding to whatever is happening around them. Science tells us that our amygdala (the ancient negative emotion related part of our brain/thoughts) is what keeps our vibrations negative. Once you are aware that you can change those instant responses to ones that support you through the power of your will, The Universal Law of Attraction will kick in and support you at the new level of vibration you are resonating at. This is the only way to change your reality and support a happier and fulfilled you.

So like most people you have wishes that you want for Christmas. Give your wishes the power they need through The Law of Attraction. Here is a simple process to follow:

1. Identify then focus on what you want and eliminate thinking about what you don't want. It is important to focus on what you want as if you already have it and feel grateful for it. "I am so happy that I now have abundant energy and great health", "I am loving, I am in love and abundantly happy and joyous".

2. Raise your awareness and raise your vibrational level. Create the feeling of what you want as if you already have it. Rejoice in those feelings with gratitude. Say next' to any words, thoughts or feelings that are not related to higher vibrations as stated above.

3. Believe and release it. Now you let your request or wants be released to higher power that will bring in your order'. Do not doubt or you cancel your order and you will have to start all over again. You push away from you when you doubt. You lower your vibration and it cannot reach you. Allow yourself to believe that on any level your order will come to you you don't know how and you don't need to know how. Just keep in the vibration of positive affirmations as in 1. and 2. above. Your job is to remove the resistance, the doubt, the negative energy so what you want can be manifested and energetically bought to you.

You can realize your dreams and wishes. You have the secret now to make them come true with powerful transformational tool of The Law of Attraction.

Hello From Ottawa - A Brisk Morning Walk To Parliament Hill

One of the interesting features of Ottawa is its architecture and Ottawa has many heritage sites. Parliament Hill with its historical neo-Gothic buildings was an area I wanted to discover in more detail.

Friday night, just after we arrived in town I was able to snap a few pictures, just before the sun went down. Saturday morning I got up and out by 7:30 am and it was a crisp morning, with perfect blue sky. It was definitely on the cold side, not a good idea to venture out without a hat or a thick scarf. So it was going to be a bad hair day again, but who cares.

I started off with the area immediately in front of the Lord Elgin Hotel, which includes the National Arts Center, the Government Conference Centre (the former Union Station, Ottawa's main railway terminal), the War Memorial and the Chateau Laurier.

Then I marched up to Parliament Hill from where you have an absolutely perfect view over to Hull and the Gatineau Hills. I admired the sculptures Women are Persons (referring to women being recognized as their own human beings), and took a number of pictures and video clips of the Parliament Buildings.

Parliament Hill is the seat of Canada's Government and consists of the Centre Block, the West Block and the East Block. The Senate and the House of Commons are also located here. Free tours are generally available every day, except my own discovery was a little bit too early to take the tour.

Incidentally Canada's Parliament Buildings have an interesting history. Lower Canada (today's Quebec) and Upper Canada (today's Ontario) joined together to form the Province of Canada in 1841. The seat of government alternated for many years until Queen Victoria was asked to select a permanent capital in 1857.

To the surprise of many, the Queen selected the rough lumber town of Ottawa instead of the established cities of Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City or Kingston. One of the reasons was that Ottawa was close to both provinces and located at a safe distance from the American border.

The Parliament Buildings were built between 1859 and 1866 (not including the Library and the Tower). One year after they were finished, Confederation occurred and the buildings were immediately selected to house the government for the newly created Dominion of Canada.

The main building of the government buildings is called Centre Block and it is instantly recognizable with its trademark Peace Tower. Visitors can watch the House of Commons and the Senate from the visitor galleries, and free tours are also available. A tour to the top of the Peace Tower rewards you with a great view all over Ottawa. Canada's war dead are honoured inside the Memorial Chamber.

The Library of Parliament Building - the only part of the original Centre Block that survived the desastrous fire of 1916 - is currently undergoing restoration work to bring it back to its former glory.

The historic East Block has not changed much since the days of Confederation. The offices of Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, have been restored and are available to visit on a public tour.

The West Block is not accessible to the public as it houses the offices of the members of parliament.

The Peace Tower is Ottawa's trademark and its name is a commemoration of Canadas commitment to peace. The Memorial Chamber is located on the third floor of the Tower, and it honours Canadians who have died in armed conflicts since Confederation. The Peace Tower also holds an observation area and the Carillon which contains 53 bells weighing anywhere from less than 5 kg to more than 10 tons.

The Centre Block was affected by a large fire in 1916. Canada began rebuilding it while still fighting in the First World War. The new structure, designed in the Modern Gothic Revival style by John Pearson and Jean Omer Marchand, was completed by 1922. The Peace Tower was finished later in 1927.

In the summer Parliament Hill offers up a unique ceremony: every day at 10 am the Changing of the Guard takes place, and this year the ceremony will be held every day from June 24 to August 26 of 2006.

Parliament Hill with its big open square lends itself naturally as a meeting and entertainment venue. The Canada Day celebrations are held here and they include free concerts, spectacular fireworks, a flight demonstration by the Snowbirds (Canada's precision aerobatic team), and you'll only have to put up with short speeches by Canadian politicians.

Another event coming up for 2006 is a free sound and light show called "Canada: the Spirit of a Country", which will be performed on a daily basis after dark between July 5 and September 10, 2006. Images will be projected onto the Parliament Buildings. Obviously Parliament Hill is not just a boring place for politicians, it is an entertainment venue and meeting place for people from Ottawa, for folks from the rest of the country and for international tourists alike.

After my discovery of the Parliament Buildings I walked further west to have a look at the Supreme Court of Canada and the other surrounding buildings. What really fascinated me where the huge plumes of steam that come out of the smokestacks, I dont recall seeing the same types of formations in Toronto. One person explained to me that the air in Ottawa is calmer as compared to Toronto where we always have wind blowing in from the lake which actually would disperse these clouds of smoke. An interesting sight....

This crisp morning walk was the perfect introduction to Ottawa and a good way to burn off calories from last night's carlory-rich evening at Fat Tuesday's. After a rather hearty breakfast at the Lord Elgin Hotel, we set off to begin our day of skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway, the main reason we had come to Ottawa.

Apart from that, the diatone type is much cheaper in price as it costs about $50.00 or a bit more. After your children have some experience playing the diatone harmonica you can get them a chromatics one which is more complicated. Minor keys are played by sliding a bar and this also rouses the sounds as well. After some practicing your children will be able to call themselves harmonica masters.

However, it is best if you give your child some books which tell him with simple graphics and show him how to play a certain song. To Tour Or Not To TourThat Is The Question!

Its every musicians fantasy. The tour bus rolls up to the arena (full of groupies, beer and pizza). Fans are crowded out front hoping to catch a glimpse of Americas hottest band. The group is escorted to their dressing room (full of more groupies, beer and pizza). They enjoy the various pleasures of stardom while roadies set up the stage. Its show time. The artists take the stage. The crowd is screaming. The lights are glaring. The amps are humming. The drummer clicks off the first song and

You wake up in the back of your PT Cruiser. Your bass players elbow is in your ear and the drummers asleep on your foot. Youve eaten nothing for the last week but corn dogs and frozen burritos. This is not the tour you imagined. This is not your Lilith Faire. This is not your Lollapalooza. This is not your Warped Tour. This...sucks.

Every musician dreams of touring. Getting out of their same boring town. Trying their tunes out on new crowds, in new areas, for fresh faces. Bonding on road, writing new tunes in the motel room, free food, free drinks, getting paid, getting laidliving the life.

But the music biz is full of touring horror stories. Bands stuck on the road with no money to come home. Musicians not eating for days. Clubs canceling gigs the night of with no warning. Negative reactions from bar patrons and local bands. The list goes on.

So, how do you make sure that your touring experience is a positive one? What can you, as musicians do, to eliminate potentially negative experiences and create positive ones.

The following are a few tips that add success to your touring experience:

1.) Dont Plan A Tour Because Youre Unhappy At Home---Just as an affair will not fix the problems in a marriage, a tour is not the cure for: problems within the band, problems in the band members lives, or a general malaise for your local scene. A tour is strain and stress and loads of work. You should be excited, and enthusiastic and positive when planning.

2.) Over Prepare Before You Leave---You can never plan too much or take too many precautions. At home is the time to rethink ever scenario and arrange accordingly. Get the van tuned up. Pack extra emergency money. Bring a list of additional clubs in the area in case your gigs fall through. Pack extra strings and sticks. Bring a backup guitar. Pack extra merchandise. Bring emergency food/water. Pack extra batteries and power cords. Bring cell phones.

3.) Be Humble And Thankful---Youre in a strange town and a new club, act like a guest. Nothing ticks off a club owner/promoter whos taken a chance on an unknown band more than out-of-towners swaggering into a club like Paris Hilton in an episode of The Simple Life. No matter how cool you are in your own town, this is unproven ground and your first impression is important. Ask, dont demand. Set up quickly. Play at an appropriate volume. Clean up after yourselves. Be friendly and courteous. Say please and thank you. Unless youre booking in Jerkville USA, this positive attitude could set you well on your way to a repeat booking with better perks and more local support.

4.) Seize Every Opportunity---If youre going to take the time away from work, family, and the buzz youve built in your own music community to head out into the great beyond and conquer unknown landsyou might as well come back with something other than lovely memories and an out-of-state parking ticket. Youre in a new place and the possibilities are endless. Sell CDs. Sell T-shirts. Get new names on your mailing list. Solicit local reviews, interviews, and radio. Introduce yourself to other club owners for future bookings. Find out who books local festivals. Play an impromptu house party after your gig. Make new friends that can street team for you next time. Think of something I havent even written here and do it!

Dont Expect To Conquer The World In One Tour---Rome wasnt built in a day and neither will your touring empire be. Have fun. Enjoy each trip and using it as a building block to make each tour to that particular place better and more elaborate. Play your cards right, and after a few trips you may be making terrific money, have secured lodging (either new friends let you crash or a club pays for a motel), get food and drinks comped, and guaranteed press and radio coverage.

In short, touring can be the best thing that ever happened to your band if you work hard, play it smart, and follow through correctly. But no matter how much you love to tour, always remember to keep your foot in the door locally. Its the great work that you do at home that makes other clubs excited about you bringing your show to their town.

Angels in Different Cultures and Religions

"Ever noticed how there seems to be angel sculptures or figurines in every home you go?

This is because many cultures in the world share the belief in the existence of this supernatural being.

In Judaism, angels, or malachim, serve as Gods messengers and workers here on Earth. It was for example, an angel who stopped Abraham just as he was about to kill his beloved son as a sacrifice to God. The angel Michael on the other hand, is viewed as the guardian and protector of the people of Israel.

With the roots of Christianity closely linked to Judaism, it comes as no surprise that Christians also hold angels in high-esteem. As in Judaism, angels also played great roles in many events viewed with great importance by Christians. It was the angel Gabriel who appeared to Mary and told her of how she was chosen by God to give birth to his son Jesus, who Christians believe is the savior of mankind. The Bible also recounts that Christs resurrection from the dead was announced by angels. Angels, Christians believe, are Gods link to man.

Angels also figure prominently in the Islam faith, one of their basic articles of faith being the belief in angels. Muslims believe that each person has four angels (which they call Malaaika, meaning, messengers) assigned to him who tallies his good and bad actions (two record the good while the other two take not of the bad). They also assign souls to newborns and are responsible for taking care of the environment.

One main difference between the Islamic and Christian/Jewish views on angels, is that for Muslims, it is not possible for angels to fall from grace, as they do cannot commit sin.

Interview With TVs Mike Nelson

Do you have to move to Los Angeles to write for the entertainment business, or can you stay where live took you so far and still be that same writer?

Michael J. Nelson would probably suggest the latter as he's enjoyed a successful, busy career while never giving up his midwestern roots. He is an author, comedian, essayist, commentator, TV writer and generally far too clever for the likes of Hollywood. According to his bio, he grew up in lovely Geneva, Illinois, but his parents moved to rural Wisconsin when he was 12 because "they wanted to make a more desolate life for him."

When the comedy circuit exploded in the mid-1980s, Nelson was quick to jump on that bandwagon, performing at clubs and colleges throughout the midwest. Some friends from the stand -up circuit asked him to "do some typing" for their show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. Nelson accepted, staying on for ten years, "talking to plastic puppets on a daily basis."

His first book, Mike Nelson's Movie Mega Cheese takes several Hollywood efforts to task - laying waste to them with laughter and a little good-natured rage. He was a natural choice to go after such sinkers when you consider what he'd spent the previous 10 years doing at the office.

In the year's since MST3K hung up its satellite, Nelson has remained in the show's hometown of Minneapolis, MN with his wife and children - turning down the occasional offer to defect to Hollywood. But, he is still in demand in the movie criticism business, providing funny commentary tracks on several classic DVDs, such as House on Haunted Hill, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Reefer Madness.

Hollywood came calling for Nelson's services more than once, but Nelson never regretted staying in the midwest: "I had no desire to move out there. I don't regret it all. I still work on the occasional thing with Hollywood here and there."

Nelson cited a negative experience working on the MST3K feature film for keeping Hollywood at a safe distance: "Making the MST film was not a smooth ride. We went from having total creative control that we earned by building a show up through an audience to taking silly orders from people who thought they knew our jobs better than we did. When it went to the movie stage they said we had no knowledge how to make a show. It was very hard to market that. It was a tough go. They wear you down throughout the development process and take a lot of the joy out of the experience."

Turning his attention to the Hollywood efforts of the last few years, Nelson noted the decline of the big Hollywood blockbuster and lauded it as a positive turn of events.

"I have only recently begin to think that there's a glimmer of hope for the movie business these days because several blockbusters have not done well - as if movies audiences are sending a message. They don't care if Hollywood wants to make big spectacle movies for foreign audiences that can sell in different markets. Maybe audiences are saying that films are below our intelligence and we don't want to spend $10 to sit through them anymore."

"People have been burned too many times in theaters. They're more cautious now. Nobody wants to waste their money on another Michael Bay film with a ridiculous story that doesn't involve an audience. So, I'm feeling a little bit of optimism that movie fans are rejecting the same old films that Hollywood is telling them to like."

"Don't get me wrong. I have no problem with big blockbusters. If they're done well, I enjoy them. But, the formula is so tired that they're rarely done well anymore."

"There's so much exhausting hype for every movie because each film has to open huge right away, first weekend - and, they have to be successful right away or they're considered failures. There are plenty of smaller movies being made, and I might be a little more drawn to them because there's less of a storm swirling around those movies - and, there's a better sense of creative control behind them with the writers and filmmakers."

While Nelson is the first to admit that he's hardly a film industry insider, he confessed to a little speculation and agreed with the popular theory that corporate management, branding and over-marketing hurt many films before, during and after production.

"It seems to me that the tightening down of corporations on the money behind these films is taking them away from the writers and directors who would be best able to make them - and make them work. I don't want to use cliche terms like "the suits" or anything like that, but I don't think the corporate people leave the writers and filmmakers alone enough to allow them to make good movies."

But, Nelson never ruthlessly blames the writers or filmmakers for the end results finding their way to the screen, "Even though the concept behind the film might have been a commercial formula, somebody had to sit down and type the words. It's very difficult, lonely work - and once it's on the page, anything can become of it during production and everyone can attack it."

"Bad movies come from a lack of originality. There's a big mechanism out there for making movies, TV and books. That said, I don't understand this fever for some hook - any hook - to build a story around. That's why we're being bombarded with remakes. Studios are looking to make movies with the least amount of risk possible."

"I don't know how you fix it. Maybe the studios should give a little more control to the writers and directors - unless they screw it up, too. Then I don't know where that leaves us."

I do hope that writers out there keep working to offer stories they enjoy - whether or not Hollywood thinks they're worthy of that hype.

Web Languages: PHP vs. ASP.NET

While the average web developer has a lot of options these days. It's really more of a bi-partisan system between ASP.NET and PHP, the rest being just independents. The battle rages between the supporters of the two languages, with no clear winner every coming out. While both can be used to complete the same project, it really depends on what you're looking for: price, speed, security, etc.

ASP.NET

If you program in ASP.NET you'll typically get too responses from the other side. Either you're rich (or your company is) or you're a Microsoft lover. While the name comes from Microsoft's old ASP technology, they made a huge leap with the .NET Framework, and the CLR allows you to use other languages for back end processing: typically Visual Basic.NET or C#.

ASP.NET's strength lies in object oriented features, and it's flexibility. Because of the CLR you can have C# programmers and VB.NET programmers working on the same project, or switch languages half way through and not have to rewrite all of your old classes. The .NET class library is organized into inheritable classes based around particular tasks, such as working with XML or image manipulation, so a lot of the more common tasks have been already handled for you.

Visual Studio .NET is a massive development IDE that (as long as your computer is fast enough) will shave tons of time of your coding. It has built in debugging along with IntelliSense, which allows for auto-completion of methods and variables so you don't have to memorize everything.

On the down side, ASP.NET is expensive. One it uses tons more resources on the web server so you'll require either better server or more servers in the farm. Windows 2003 and Visual Studio .NET are pretty tough on the pocket book as well. It's extremely rare for an ASP.NET app not to be running on IIS. And if you pay attention to any of the bug reports, you'll notice that Windows and IIS have had a bit of a history with vulnerabilities being exploited.

PHP

PHP works in combination of HTML to display dynamic elements on the page. PHP only parses code within its delimiters, such as . Anything outside its delimiters is sent directly to the output and not parsed by PHP.

PHP strength lies mostly in LAMP. The LAMP architecture has become popular in the Web industry as a way of deploying inexpensive, reliable, scalable, secure web applications. PHP is commonly used as the P in this bundle alongside Linux, Apache and MySQL. PHP can be used with a large number of relational database management systems, runs on all of the most popular web servers and is available for many different operating systems. This flexibility means that PHP has a wide installation base across the Internet; over 18 million Internet domains are currently hosted on servers with PHP installed.

With PHP 5 finally came exception handling and true OOP, but it still lack namespacing to prevent class naming collisions. PHP's type checking is very loose, potentially causing problems. Another drawback is that variables in PHP are not really considered to have a type. Finally, for some reason big corporations feel that if they're not paying for something, then it's not worth buying. If that's you're company's mentality, they just need to wake up and check out all the awesome free software that's out there.

So Which Is Better?

We'll I have my opinions and you may have yours as well. But in general, PHP is cheap, secure, fast, and reliable, while ASP.NET has quicker development time and is easier due to its class library system can probably be maintained more easily. Both are great languages, and it's up to you to make the decision.
